Feet First Philly manages the @NotaSpotPhila Twitter account and Instagram account as part of advocacy for safer streets for pedestrians in Philadelphia.
Feet First Philly manages this campaign as a part of pedestrian advocacy, particularly for individuals with disabilities. We are dedicated to supporting accessibility, and ensuring cleared crosswalks and sidewalks for pedestrians is essential. Because it leads to unsafe crossing of intersections, and forcing pedestrians into traffic, parking illegally can end in serious injury and even loss of life. Our goal is to make Philadelphia’s streets safe and accessible for everyone.
We need your help! Tag @FeetFirstPhilly, @NotASpotPhila and #NotAParkingSpot on Twitter with photos and locations of vehicles parked illegally. You can also email your submissions with the time and location to firstname.lastname@example.org.
To work towards a long-term solution, Feet First Philly is building a database with times and locations to share with decision makers in Philadelphia. This database will convey how wide-spread this issue is and push through sustainable solutions like enforcement. Each of the items in this database breaks the regulations set by the City of Philadelphia. City Code Chapter 12-913 outlines the regulations for parking and stopping, and clearly states, “Except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or to protect the safety of any person or vehicle or in compliance with law or the directions of a police officer or official traffic-control device, no person shall: (a) Stop, stand or park a vehicle: (i) On the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street. (ii) On a sidewalk except that a bicycle may be parked as provided in Section 12-807. (iii) Within an intersection. (iv) On a crosswalk.”
With your help, Feet First Philly will ensure cleared pedestrian zones and safe streets for all.
