On Saturday, June 3rd Feet First Philly and Clean Air Council partnered with Neighborhood Gardens Trust and AARP Philadelphia for a walking tour of three community gardens in Powelton. The walk was well attended and the garden leaders were extremely knowledgeable about their spaces. It was fantastic to learn about each garden, and the positive impacts they all have on their surrounding community, including by improving walkability.
The tour started at 3225-3227 Race Street at the Summer Winter Community Garden. This is located adjacent to Drexel’s campus and has a long history. Here are a few photos from this stop.

The group then walked approximately three quarters of a mile to the second garden. Along the walk everyone was prompted to think about the different walkability issues they see and what could be done to improve walkability in the area.
The second garden was the Wiota Community Garden (4020 Powelton Avenue) which was established in 1984. The plots in this garden had specific crops and gardeners who were responsible for the maintenance of each plot.

The final stop was on Holly Street at the Holly Street Community Garden (323 N Holly Street). This garden also has a long history and welcomes volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the tour.
