NYC is reducing speed limits to 20 mph in 13 neighborhoods throughout the city. Lower speeds for cars make it safer for pedestrians–a collision with a vehicle traveling at 20 mph is 35% less likely to be fatal than one in which the car is going 30 mph.

This is great news! I was under the impression that such speed limit changes can be very difficult to implement due to conflicting traffic agencies (PennDOT), but perhaps Philly could be next?
As I commented on the original post, I think it’s important to also spin this as pro-motorist. Low urban speed limits greatly benefit drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. For more information on that, see this document from the UK.
